Theme Inn Brings iWork’s Style To Office With Hundreds Of Amazing Templates
Theme Inn offers nearly 500 amazing Office for Mac templates

One of the standout features of Apple’s iWork suite is how easy it is to make really standout documents and presentations. Compared to the basic and often drab files that Word, Excel, and PowerPoint produce, iWork-created files look bright, polished, and offer a sense of personality and style. While Office for Mac comes with a set of templates and design functions, they seem bland next to iWork and they aren’t anywhere near as easy to use.
Only Microsoft has the ability to make its tools less clunky and more intuitive, but other companies can spice things up with additional themes and templates. This week Theme Inn took up that challenge and succeeded rather spectacularly.
The graphic design team at Theme Inn launched its first two template packs, which are designed for use with the Mac version of Office. The template packs are available for $19.99 on the Mac App Store.
The first pack, released on Monday, includes 50 themes for Excel.
The second pack, released yesterday, includes 411 themes for Word.

A PowerPoint pack with 25 presentation themes is in the works but isn’t yet available (most likely because its waiting for Apple’s App Store approval).

A bundle of all three packs is also planned that will save 30% off the cost of buying the packs individually. Like the PowerPoint pack, Theme Inn lists it as coming soon.
While the cost of the templates may seem a little steep, the quality and selection are worth the price. The templates are visually stunning and have a very professional polish to them. In all honesty, they don’t look like something you’d expect to find for Office. Documents created using the Word templates, for example, look custom and professionally designed.
To put it simply, they seem very iWork-like. As a result, they’re actually a good alternative to using iWork to create documents and exporting the files for users with the various Office formats. They bring the style of iWork to Office and do so with full Office compatibility. That makes them a great choice for anyone that needs to create Office documents for work or school but want’s the visual punch the iWork offers.

Apple’s Defense of Siri in Class-Action Lawsuit Never Actually Says Siri Doesn’t Suck Back in March, Apple was hit with a class action lawsuit over Siri being dumb and bad. Which, well—yeah, pretty much. But instead of rushing to the defense of its prized new software, Apple has run out a defense of, basically, “No, YOU ARE.”
Here’s the introduction and summary of Apple’s motion to dismiss the case, as dug up by the Wall Street Journal:

Tellingly, although Plaintiffs claim they became dissatisfied with Siri’s performance “soon after” purchasing their iPhones, they made no attempt to avail themselves of Apple’s 30-day return policy or one-year warranty-which remains in effect. Instead, they seek to take an alleged personal grievance about the purported performance of a popular product and turn it into a nationwide class action under California’s consumer protection statutes. The Complaint does not come close to meeting the heavy burden necessary to sustain such claims.

And hey, sure, that makes sense when you’re trying to get a lawsuit tossed. But once it gets to talking about Siri’s actual performance, here’s all Apple has to say: “As a cutting-edge technology still under development, Siri was released (and remains) in “beta.” … Apple disclosed Siri’s beta status both during the October 4, 2011 press event in which Apple announced iPhone 4S and in the accompanying Press Release.”
Not exactly a shining endorsement.
And it’s not like Siri deserves one. Everyone kind of comes off looking bad here. Apple is right that Siri is in beta, but that’s fine, fine print in the glossy ads that it’s shoving down tech-dumb America’s throats. And the jackasses suing over voice command software are jackasses—the kind who class-action sue over something as asinine as voice command software.
Still, it’s fun that when Apple has to come down to it, in legal terms, its description of Siri boils down to, “WE’RE WORKING ON IT, OK?”

WSJ: Apple moving towards larger iPhone screens The idea of a smaller iPad has been rattling around the tech rumor mill for many a month now, but the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen? That’s sacred surely? Well, according to the Wall Street Journal, apparently not. It’s reporting that those ever-famous “people familiar with the situation” have told it that Apple has ordered screens that are larger that the ones used in the flagship phone so far. There’s no specifics on size, with the sources only going as far to say they are “at least” four inches. Apple, however, has declined to comment — no surprises there — but perhaps now is the time to start the office pool.
